Ballymaloe House
Ballymaloe House
Ireland’s most famous country house (modestly described as ‘a large family farmhouse’ in their Blue Book entry) is a place that may not immediately come to mind for a wedding, but the Allen family’s fine creeper-clad old house surrounded by well-maintained lawns and woodland serves what many regard as the best food in Ireland, and is as romantic a venue as one could wish for. There are numerous churches nearby, including the historic Church of Ireland Cloyne Cathedral, and wedding blessings are possible at the house too. Although offering an official ‘wedding planning service’ is not their style, Hazel Allen will help in every way with contacts for church, florists, photographers, hire of any kind of transport, and arrange decoration of the venue.
The reception is held country house style, and food - much of it supplied by the farmlands and garden surrounding Ballymaloe, cooked in their uniquely simple style - can be a sit down meal, buffet or a mixture of table service and buffet.
Accommodation is available in the main house and adjacent buildings; rooms vary, as is the way with old houses, but these are proper country bedrooms - comfortable, not over-decorated but with many thoughtful touches - and Ireland’s most ancient hotel room is in The Gate House: a tiny one up (twin bedroom with little iron beds) and one down (entrance foyer and full bathroom) in the original medieval wall of the old house.
A wedding held here would indeed be memorable.
