Glin Castle
As a romantic wedding destination, Glin Castle would take some beating: surrounded by formal gardens and parkland, the castle stands proudly on the south bank of the Shannon 32 miles west of Limerick - the FitzGeralds, hereditary Knights of Glin, have lived here for 700 years and it is now the home of the 29th Knight and his wife Madame FitzGerald. The interior is stunning, with beautiful rooms enhanced by decorative plasterwork and magnificent collections of Irish furniture and paintings. But its most attractive feature of this wedding venues that everything is kept just the same as usual for guests, who are magnificently looked after by the manager, Bob Duff.
There is a charming church at the gates of the castle, and wedding blessings can be held at the castle. The Knight modestly describes his home as ‘a small historic house’ and, while that is a matter of relativity, the rooms are not huge - the maximum number in the dining room is 36, although a larger room seats 56, and up to 100 can be accommodated in a marquee on the lawn.
Menus at Glin change daily, with the seasons, and the wedding menu will be personally selected and priced for the bride and groom; sit down dinners with choices are possible for up to 50 guests, but a buffet or limited choice menu could be arranged for larger numbers.
The entire property - to include use of castle, accommodation, gardens, cook and housekeepers - must be taken for a minimum of 2 days regardless of group size. Guest rooms and suites include the deliciously romantic Blue Four-Poster Bedroom and are decorated in style, with all the modern comforts, plus that indefinable atmosphere created by beautiful old things; staying here for a couple of days will be a treat for the most pampered guest - the gardens are wonderful, there is tennis on site, also an interesting shop, and there is so much do in the area, including a ferry trip across to County Clare if you like - and a visit to O’Shaughnessy’s lovely old pub, just outside the castle walls, is a must.
