Longueville House
Longueville House
The O’Callaghan family’s elegant Georgian mansion is set in 500 acres of private wooded grounds, and the location - overlooking the famous River Blackwater, and the ruins of the original O’Callaghan home, Dromineen Castle - is lovely. The present house dates from 1720, with wings added in 1800, and the wonderful Turner conservatory, which has been completely renovated, was built in 1862 - romantically draped with muslin, this historic conservatory and the adjacent Presidents Restaurant (named after the family collection of specially commissioned portraits of all Ireland’s past presidents) make a stunning backdrop for a memorable wedding dinner cooked by renowned chef-proprietor William O’Callaghan.
The river, farm and garden supply his kitchen with fresh salmon in season, Longueville lamb, and all the fruit and vegetables - and, in good years, the estate’s crowning glory is their own house wine, a light refreshing white, “Coisreal Longueville”. Arriving guests are shown to the bar and drawing room, both elegantly furnished with beautiful fabrics and family antiques, and accommodation is equally sumptuous. Wedding blessings are not possible here, but there are several churches nearby, and a synagogue and registry in Cork city.
Unusually, wedding packages are charged at a flat rate of €95 per person at weekends and €75 per person midweek (Sun-Thurs); this makes it relatively simple to work to a budget and is good value, as it includes pre-dinner canapes, a 4-course dinner with no supplement for choices, and late-night finger food.
Restrictions are that the full house must be booked, plus half of the rooms on the alternate night for weekend weddings, and there is a charge of €3.50 per person for place cards, rolled and tied menus and printed table plans.
Pampering afternoons for brides and girlfriends can be arranged, with cosmetics appointment by appointment - and this is a wonderful place to spend a few days: Cork, Kinsale and Kenmare are all nearby, or you could just spend a relaxing day loafing around.
