Temple House

One of Ireland’s most unspoilt old houses, this is a Georgian mansion on 1,200 acres of farm and woodland, overlooking the original lakeside castle which was built by the Knights Templar in 1200
A.D. The Percevals have lived here since 1665, and the house was redesigned and refurbished in 1864; despite essential modernisation, Temple House - now run by Roderick and Helena Perceval has retained its old atmosphere and, in addition to central heating, has log fires to cheer the enormous rooms (the bridal couple usually choose the ‘half acre’ bedroom, for its sheer size and light).

Wedding blessings are not possible here but there are several churches to choose from nearby, and the house and gardens present endless opportunities for photographs. The wedding party takes over the guest rooms and grounds for two days and the venue hire charge includes 2 nights bed and breakfast and one dinner for 12 guests; there are terraced gardens and miles of woodland walks, and the wedding party may also explore the lake in a rowing boat and fish for pike.

The wedding reception will be located to look out over the castle and lake - fireworks provide a wonderful spectacle here, lighting up the castle and grand old trees in the parkland. For smallish numbers, the event can be held indoors the grand dining room can seat up to 18, and the drawing room seats up to 80; over those numbers, a marquee can be set up on the croquet lawn - a champagne reception is first held in the house, allowing everyone to enjoy its grandeur, then the party moves out to an open or clear-sided marquee.

The size of gathering also affects the catering: the three menus offered are prepared in-house for up to 50 guests, over that number the Percevals call in their preferred caterer. Decor is the couple’s responsibility, and a local wedding service can be recommended to assist.
